Extensive manufacturing technology research is necessary if glass containers are to remain competitive with containers made from other materials. Glass has several advantages as a packaging material. However, despite these advantages, glass-packaged product face significant competitive pressures from products made of other materials. Consumers prefer glass more than any other package material. Glass provides superior taste, health, visual appeal, cosmetic appeal and value. Therefore, the worldwide glass-packaging industry has the opportunity to grow and become dominant within the total packaging industry, but major breakthroughs in technology are needed to assist manufacturers if glass is to achieve worldwide leadership.
