Glass Bottles, Strength And Design

This article is based on a lecture by B Simmingskold, which took place in Amsterdam in 1960, showing how bottle design, proper handling and control can reduce the breakage and increase the lifetime of glass bottles. The importance of these factors for the strength of the bottles will be realised only if the very special mechanical properties of glass are taken into consideration but they are, unfortunately, not always given sufficient attention in practice. Modern bottle makers will perhaps not find many new facts in this paper, but it is hoped that many consumers of glass bottles, and some fillers/washers/packers would find the information useful.
