The GE Lighting Euclid lamp plant in Cleveland, OH, produces a variety of industrial, household and automotive lamps. In the production of these lamps the bulb, exhaust tube and mount structure, consisting of lead wires and coil, are sealed together by heating the bulb and mechanically pinching the glass to form a seal around the wires and exhaust tube. The process, however, results in a large amount of residual stress on the bulb. GE Euclid installed a Raytek marathon MR1S integrated temperature sensor with a 600-1400 deg C temperature range, 44:1 optical resolution and 10mSec respnse time. The sensor is mounted on a flexible arm on the annealing lehr, so it can measure the glass bulbs at any of the stations on the chain, and the different stages in the process.
