The present trend in UK universities for bachelors-level materials degrees of increasing breadth means that, to educate technical employees to the level and detail required, many refractories companies need to develop in-house training schemes, or make use of various short courses available through universities or professional training organisations. At the postrgraduate level opportunities are beginning to emerge for part-time Masters and PhD qualifications linked to universities. An up-to-date textbook is urgently needed to augment these courses.
