A Further Twist To The Float-Glass Process

Techniques have been developed for modifying the surface of float glass by driving metallic ions into the glass by driving metallic ions into the glass to a controlled depth and intensity while the ribbon is advancing. It is possible to produce glasses with a range of colours from grey-bronze to copper-bronze. The equipment necessary for the technique costs £15,000 and enables changes from clear to modified glass and back again to be made in a few minutes.
