In most technoligcal developments, joining problems are of prime concern. Utilization of advanced ceramics and their applications in engines and highly severe environments are dependent on satisfactory joining between them and dissimilar materials. The objective of this paper is to define and develop an understanding of the basic principles and fundamentals that play a role in realizing chemical bonding at interfaces. The fundamentals are similar for all types of seals and are based on the principal scientific disciplines of solid-state chemistry and surface chemistry.
