Fsa Consults Over New Laws On Plastic For Food Packaging

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has launched a consultation into deadlines for legislation on plastics used in food packaging. The Plastic Materials and Articles in Contact with Food (England) Regulation 2008 will prohibit the production or importing of materials that do not comply with EU directive 2007/19/EC. The FSA previously held a full consultation on the regulation, but is now seeking industry reaction to two specific dates. By 1 July 2008, non-compliant gaskets and materials that do not comply with specifications for phthalates are prohibited. The final deadline for compliance for plastic and all food contact materials is 1 May 2009. However, existing stock can be sold beyond these dates until it runs out. Submissions must be made by 21 March.
