Frozen Optical Anisotropy In Drawn Flat Glass

Silicate glass is, if uniaxially loaded in the transformation range, optically anisotropic at room temperature. In glass objects with large surfaces this anisotropy can be detected if the stresses in suitability cut specimens are examined. The magnitude and direction of this effect allows one to draw some conclusions about the solidification of flat glass during drawing.
