The ceramic industry is facing a number of problems: resources are dwindling as energy costs rise; environmental regulations are becoming increasingly stringent; and global trade opens the playing field to producers with much lower labour and regulatory compliance costs. However, the ceramic industry is committed to cleaner, more sustainable operations, and the pressure is on to minimise or eliminate pollution, while remaining viable in an increasingly competitive market. Relief is on hand, however, through both product and process solutions involving borates.
