[France] Adelphe Figures Hamper National Recycling Results

Adelphe, the organisation approved to collect glass in France, has put back France's overall recycling rate, according to the 2004 Annual Report of French packaging recovery organisation Eco Emballages. The ratio of contributing tonnage of the two accredited companies has made the national recycling performance harder to judge and lowered the global rate from Eco Emballages 65% to 55%. Eco Emballages says that to achieve the EU recycling target set for glass of 60% by 2008, it will not only be necessary to collect more bottles but also alternative methods of recycling must be found, as the transitional means (eg bottle banks) are exhausted. For plastic packaging (18%) collection rates also need to increase. Eco Emballages itself, apart from aluminium is well on the way to achieving national objectives for 2008.
