Forensic Examination Of Glass Splinters By Activation Analysis. (In German)

Some glass splinters from the sole of a suspects shoe were compared with pieces of champagne glass found at the scene of a crime with eight specimens of glass from common types of drinking vessel and bottles. After removal of surface impurities by washing with HNO3, the samples were wrapped in aluminium foil and irradiated in a thermal-neutron flux of 8x1013 n cm-2 s-1 fro 11 days. After 1 week (for decay of 24Na), the irradiated samples were examined by y-ray spectrometry with a Ge(Li) detector linked to a 4000-channel analyser.
