Food Safety Of Recycled Plastics

Following a public consultation, the EU Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has published guidelines for the safety evaluation of recycled plastics that are in contact with food. The new EU regulation on plastics, EC 282/2008, aims to limit potential food contamination by chemicals migrating from packs, and requires that recycled plastics be obtained only from processes approved by the EFSA. The Authority will assess the quality of the input materials, the efficiency of the decontamination process and the intended use of the recycled material. Applications for approval of recycling processes can be sent to the EFSA. See: www.efsa.europa.eu
