The availability of suitable raw materials was one of the main prerequisites for establishing glass manufacture in Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia in the 11th century. Fortunately, these raw materials have remained plentiful even though glassmaking has become a large-scale industrial process and at present, the Czech and Slovak glass industries depend upon a continuous local supply for all their basic raw material needs. The characteristics of the silica sand, feldspar, dolomite limestone and other raw materials available in the former Czechoslovakia are discussed in this article.
