Fluorescence arising from the 5D0 state of Eu3+ is studied in glasses of x (Na2O. p2O5) y WO3 composition. On gradual change of the ratio between x and y a parallel alteration is obtained in the shape and splitting of 5Do-7F1 and in the ratio between (5DO-7F2)/(5DO-7F1) transitions. From the comparison of these results with those of Eu3+ in phosphate glasses and tungstate crystals, it is evident that at a definite range of x/y ratio, the optical properties of Eu3+ resemble those of Eu3+ in tungstate crystals. It is concluded that the glasses can be used for preparation of materials having the optical properties of tungstate crystals.
