The Fluorescence Of Atoms Near A Glass Surface

Fluorescence theory may be modified to include atom-wall collisions assuming that the induced polarisation of an atom is lost in such collisions. The conventional and modified theory is reviewed and experiments featuring sub-Doppler structure are related to the transient polarisation behaviour.
