The role of the refiner and forehearth in glass conditioning is discussed and accepted ideas of conditioning are disputed. The concept of effective mixing capacity is developed and the difference between mixing of amber and flint are outlined. Some illustrations are given of refractory wear on throats and a revised theory of glass flow is presented.
