This paper outlines the background, features and performance of a novel oxy-fuel burner for glass melting applications. Flame characteristics such as controllable heat transfer rates and NOx formation rates have been optimised using Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) techniques and contrary to traditional axisymmetric oxy-fuel systems, "flat" flames have been established using proprietary burner technology to give uniform heat transfer rates. Some results from a research furnace installation are also presented here.
