The surface modified float process, a modification of the float process operating the basis of an electrochemical system which under the influence of an electric field drives metallic ions into the glass to a controlled depth and intensity while the ribbon is advancing, is briefly described. The ions form fine metal particles which are concentrated immediately below the glass surface which they are impervious to abrasion and chemical attack.
