Despite an onslaught of criticism from advocacy groups and scientists, the US FDA is standing behind its draft assessment of bisphenol A, deeming current levels of exposure to the chemical safe. "Our tentative conclusion from this draft is that there is an adequate margin of safety," Laura Tarantino, Director of FDA's Office of Food Additive Safety, told reporters recently at a meeting of the FDA Science Board Subcommittee. "Obviously, if we thought that it was not safe, or if any new information changes that, we would take action to control its level." The subcommittee, which is peer reviewing the FDA assessment, is also considering comments from the public and a panel of experts, and will present its findings to the full board in October 2008. The Science Board will then make recommendations to FDA regarding bisphenol A.
