An Explanation For The Mixed Alkali Effect Of Electric Conduction From Mechanical Stabilisation Of Dissimilar Ions

The mixed alkali effect of ionic conductivity in silicate glasses was attributed to a mechanical stabilisation of dissimilar alkali species. The change in the activation energy was treted by assuming an equivalent pressure around a structural unit containing two alkali ions, which was related to the expansion of the network. An examination was made on the available experimental results.
