European Standards For Measuring Furnace Particulate Emissions

The emission of particulate matter from glass furnaces is regulated by authorities around the world, although there is no single standard assessment method or one standard emission regulation. The impact of this inconsistency is being addressed by TC13, the environment committee of the International Commission on Glass. In this article, Mark Pudner and Simon Slade describe the EU standard methods and outline some of the potential consequences of using the different techniques. A second article will describe the methods used in the USA in the next issue of Glass Worldwide. Understanding and interpreting results of different methods is especially important when comparing measurements against legally enforceable limits.
