The EMAS regulations of the European Community introduce the voluntary adhesion of glass manufacturers to an environmental control scheme which implies a change from mandatory legislation to voluntary control tools: adherent companies apply in their plants a specific environmental policy involving a scheme of applications, well defined limits and the action of an external auditor. The application of the EMAS scheme in a number of chemical companies is described and the advantages and problems are considered as compared to present enviornmental control standards.
