Environment Agency Issues Warning To Packaging Suppliers

Among the companies the Environment Agency has had to approach regarding the first stage of implementing a European-wide emissions trading scheme in the UK, are those involved in the manufacture of glass and glass fibre, paper and board as well as producers of pulp from timber and other fibrous materials. Government departments will be setting a cap on the combined amount of carbon dioxide that can be emitted from these business activities in the first two year-phase (2005-07). Each individual business and other affected organisations will be awarded a proportion of this cap. Those affected by the regulations must receive a permit from the Environment Agency by 31 March 2004. Draft application forms and permits are available for comment on the Agency's website at www.environment-agency.gov.uk/business/444217/444663
