Italian-based Buala Closures plans to offset the CO2 emissions of a billion of its wine screw caps this year, via a reforestation programme in India. The supplier says that it has made sustainability a fully-integrated part of its company-wide strategy since 2010, "following and monitoring 12 key indicators to achieve a better overall performance." The said billion screw caps now qualify for Guala's private eco-responsible label - which is certified by independent body Ecocert Environment, and includes offsetting CO2 emissions generated during the production phase to customer delivery as one of its criteria. Guala's Franco Bove said: "This year is the third year that we've financed rigorous CO2 offsetting programmes, and this time we're supporting a reforestation agenda in Bihar, E India - one of the poorest districts in the country. 80,000 trees from 17 different species are being planted in coordination with the Up2green NGO, and in collaboration with the state of Bihar, to support the region's biofuel, horticulture, medical and timber industries. This will hugely benefit the communities there."
