The automobile is still the favoured means of locomotion in Europe, yet the car is at the same time accused of having detrimental environmental impacts falling into two main categories: pollution and loss of resources. In this respect, ELV is a particularly critical issue. The EU Directive on end-of-life vehicles (2000/53/EC) aims at dealing with around 10M/tons waste generated by the 12M cars reaching the end of the road each year.
