Electric Melting In Making Glass For Building And Engineering Purposes

The history of electric melting in the glass industry is outlined and four types of electric furnace developed by the Soviet State Glass Institute are described briefly. These have designed loads of 0.5-1 tonne/day (primarily for glazes and frits), 3-5 tonnes/day (for glass fibre), 10-12 tonnes/day (for borosilicate tubing), and 80-100 tonnes/day for sodium silicate.
