In Europe, glass melting on an industrial scale has the longest tradition. Following this tradition, Europe has remained until today the continent with the biggest production of glass. Of the EU glass industry, 94% of total glass produced is mainly directed towards supplying domestic markets and the EG inland. In western industrial countries, annual glass consumption per person is between 60 and 80kg. This paper looks at worldwide glass production, subdivided into regions, followed by a summary of the energy situation and environmental aspects. It also covers the use of refractories, such as AZS materials, electric boosting, electrodes, types of all-electric furnaces and finally, separation of glass melting process steps.
