Heat losses by radiation in the atmosphere from the hot linings represent a major part of the energy consumption of glass melting furnaces. The crown is the largest area of the furnace, where the heat losses are usually high, at 1800-2000W/m2 or more. For three decades Lubisol has been engaged in the reduction of such heat losses by improving insulation efficiency. As a result, the company is now offering a better crown insulation, where heat losses are reduced to 1000-1200W/m2, as this article reports.
