Effect Of Glass Composition On Silanol Content: A Study Of Green Vs Solar Glass

As an initiative to reduce vehicle cabin temperature; the composition of automatic glazing is changing from standard green to solar glass. Solar glass has greater infrared radiation absorbance characteristics while maintaining a high visible light transmittance. Transmission values are obtained using UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy. The metal oxides responsible for infrared reflectance will be determined using SEM-EDS/WDS. It is well understood that non-bridging cations alter the structure of silicate glass. FT-IR spectroscopy will be employed to determine the effect of metal oxides on silanol concentration. The concentration of the silanol functional group is critical for adequate silane coupling in post processing. Differences of radiation transmittance, elemental composition, and silanol content of solar glass vs standard green glass is discussed.
