Contemporary photoelasticity provides a variety of methods for analysing residual stresses in glass plates and in articles of complicated shape. However, these methods are often complicated both experimatally and algorithmically. Their application may need specific measuring apparatus and software. It appears that on many occasions it is possible to measure surface and edge stress in glass articles by using a simple photoelastic measurement technique and simple algorithms for the interpretation of the measurement data. This paper reviews such simplified residual stress measurements.
