According to data from Ecovidrio, 99.4% of the Spanish population is served by waste glass collection and recycling services. A total of 116,492 glass collection containers have been installed in 7,500 local authorities across the country. In 2004, uniform distribution of containers was achieved country-wide with the installation of 9,719 new containers. Spain is the EU leader with a container for every 371 inhabitants, exceeding targets proposed under Spain's National Plan for Urban Waste. In 2004, the amount of container glass collected rose by 7.8%, compared with 2003. Spain's national glass recycling rate is 41%, still below the 60% set by the EU for 2008. As well as container glass, waste glass from other sources is also recycled, making the combined total 675,280 tonnes for 2004.
