Early Stages Of Glass Batch Reactions: A Model Study

The interaction between slowly reacting components of batch, i.e. quartz, K-feldspar and Al203 and alkali carbonate was studied. Processes occurring at the mineral and carbonate interface were investigated. Corrosion of the mineral surface, migration of chemical components and formation of layer of carbonate enriched in Si02 and Al203 was determined. Rate of this layer formation and its thickness and composition are dependent on the rate of interaction of alkalies on the mineral surface. Deep diffusion of Na into K-fledspar accelerating its melting was observed.
