Durable Fibres From Phosphate Glasses: Feasibility Studies And Process Development

A method for producing phosphate glass fibres having remarkable durability and uniform diameters from the glass melt state is reported. In addition, the flow characteristics of the melt in this method have been optimised using both temperature and haul off speed so that fibres of a desired diameter can be made. The results obtained from an accelerated water durability test show that even under the severe conditions of high temperature and water immersion, the glass fibre dissolution rate is in the order of magnitude of 10-5g cm-3 min-1.
