Dispersion Reinforced Glass And Glass-Ceramic Matrix Composites

The mechanical behaviour of Al203 platelet reinforced borosilicate glass matrix composites has been investigated. The variation of Young's modulus, fracture strength and fracture toughness with the volume fraction of platelet content has been studied. The addition of platelets did not appear to affect the critical flaw size of the composite. This fact, and the good matrix/platelet interfacial bond resulted in a simultaneous increase of the fracture strength and toughness to values of 3 times greater than those of the monolithic glass.
