The preparation of cheap technical glass-ceramic materials by crystallising glasses, derived from waste from granite quarries, and based on the diopside-anorthite eutectic system containing increasing amounts (10-50wt%) of wollastonite was investigated. Waste from granite quarries constituted about 52% of the batch constituents depending on composition. The waste from granite quarries was sometimes modified by the addition of other ingredients such as dolomite, limestone and Al2O3. Batches were melted and then cast into glass, which was subjected to heat treatment to induce crystallisation. The resulting glass-ceramic materials formed by heat treatment at 1000 deg C for 3h were mainly composited of diopside, anorthite, wollastonite and mullite. With increasing heat treatment, diopside and anorthite were transformed into akermanite and mullite.
