Efforts to develop microdevices for analyzing chemical content of complex mixtures of gases and liquids have increased over the last 10 years. Some devices are produced in miniature using advanced fabrication techniques, although they are based on the operating principles of traditional laboratory analytical instruments. Non-traditional devices that exploit electrochemical and/or catalytic properties of solids and interfaces take the form of analyte-specific solid state sensors. Performance of these devices rivals that of large-scale instruments. Their reduced size offers such advantages as ruggedness and decreased power consumption.
