Developments In Submerged Combustion Melting

The Gas Technology Institute (GTI) is developing submerged combustion melting (SCM) as the melting and homogenisation stage of the Next Generation Melting System (NGMS). GTI is leading a consortium including Corning Inc, Johns Manville, Owens Corning, PPG Industries Inc, Schott North America and the Glass Manufacturing Industry Council in this effort. The project team appreciates financial support from the US Department of Energy, the US gas industry, and the glass company members of the project consortium. The team has melted a range of industrial glass batches in a lab-scale SCM, has carried out physical and CFD modelling of the SCM process, and has designed and nearly finished fabrication of a 1/ ton/h continuous SCM unit for further testing.
