Determination Of Total Sulphur In Glass By Infrared Detection Of Sulphur Dioxide (So2) Using Combustion Equipment

TC2 of the ICG has been requested to establish a reliable method which might be applied for the quantification of total sulphur level in glass types ranging from reduced flint to highly reduced glasses. In the optimised procedure, the glass sample for analysis is mixed with iron and an accelerator. Total sulphur is liberated as sulphur dioxide (SO2) by inductive heating under an oxygen atmosphere and is measured in an infrared cell. In general, six laboratories took part in the collaborative investigations carried out on the above mentioned soda-lime-silica glass types.
