The need to determine the complex refractive index of glass over a wide infrared spectrum in order to study heat transfer through bulk and porous glass is discussed. Two applications are presented: a scattering medium, such as glass fibre, with radiative properties strongly dependent on wavelength; and total apparent emissivity of a glass sheet computed as a function of temperature and thickness.
