The Design, Construction And Validation Of A Structural Glass Dome

The tendency for structural glass is increasing. The main limit on the structural use of glass is the high variability of the strength leading to low design stresses. This problem is circumvented in dome construction where the glass is loaded only in compression, with care taken to avoid buckling. In a demonstration, a 5.5m diameter dome was designed and constructed. To connect the heat strengthened glass panels special bonded joints were designed which connect the glass in such a way that stress concentrations are avoided.
