A method has been developed for calculating the optimum-configuration of the cavity of a suction mold based on an examination of heat transfer data and hydrodynamics during the forming of the parison and the finished item. An example of the calculation is given as applied to the suction mold of a bottle produced on a VV-7 automatic machine. Use of the technique at the Odessa plant has enabled weight reductions of 40-50g to be achieved with speed increases of 8-10%.
