Magnesite-chrome refractory brick that is heated to temperatures as low as 500 deg C undergoes premature degradation, with a significant decrease in mechanical properties. Results that are obtained by dilatometry, differential thermal analysis, thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffractometry, and water adsorption indicate that superficial hydration of the periclase grains during storage causes such degradation.
