The Government's new packaging roadmap for the coming decade in England will be published at the end of October. J Hammond, head of branch of the producer responsibility team at Defra has led work on the roadmap, which is understood to be based on outline plans published by the PM's Strategy Unit in July on food policy. She has consulted a number of interested bodies, including the Advisory Committee on Packaging and the Packaging Recycling Action Group on the project. "We have a packaging system that has served us well over the past 10y,but it was designed at a time when the carbon agenda was not as important as it is now." she said. The group is currently gathering evidence of where the packaging market is going in the next decade and investigating "whether it would make sense to move from weight to carbon targets," said Hammond.
