Decolourisers Improve Cullet, Claims Report

Findings from a report by WRAP will help the industry absorb more green glass to its current production. The 2/y Colourite project, carried out by Glass Technology Services, working with container glass manufacturers, explored barriers to increasing the amount of recovered glass cullet from mixed colour collections that can be used in the production of new clear glass. The 1st phase of the project focused on finding solutions to allow clear glass furnaces to produce an acceptable product using colour contaminated cullet. Trials established that an acceptable quality of cullet can be achieved by adding decolourisers to the furnace. According to WRAP, another result of the work has been the development of a specification for colour contamination of processed glass which makes use of the new sampling method has been agreed by glass processors & manufacturers.
