Damage Resistant Coatings On Glass Containers

This paper reviews various approaches to the use of coatings for increasing or retaining the strength of containers. Traditional hot and cold end coatings have been discussed in several, often contradictory, reports. The existing literature is surveyed, commonly accepted interpretations are summarized, and an attempt is made to resolve conflicting data and to compare the results of production and laboratory investigations. More recent approaches (such as strengthening by ion exchange and additional protection by overcoating with various polymer films) are also reviewed. (copy in "coatings" file)
