Cullet Recycling

Rexam Glass is investing more than £500,000 in Europe's first fully automated colour separation system. The machine is part of Rexam Glass' partnership with Glass Recycling UK. It uses laser scanning technology to separate mixed coloured cullet into green, amber and white coloured parts. Previously, automated separation systems did not enable mixed cullet to be separated into three primary colours to the same degree. The system reduces cross colour contamination, allowing more cullet to be processed into recycled glass. Rexam is one of the UKs largest cullet recyclers, reprocessing over 120,000/tpa. Recycled material currently accounts for 50% of glass produced at its manufacturing plant in Barnsley and the new system will boost the production using recycled clear and amber glass at the Rexam plant.
