Nucleation and growth mechanisms controlling the crystallisation of a liquid cooled below the melting temperature have been investigated. Mathematical expressions for nucleation growth rate as a function of the material parameters and temperature under homogenous and heterogeneous nucleation conditions have been obtained. It has been pointed out that the crystallisation process is strongly affected by the kinetic barriers to nucleation and growth which could stop the crystallisation and give rise to glass forming.
