Council Chief Speaks Out Against Glass Ban In Glasgow Pubs

Glasgow's council leader, Steven Purcell said he is against a blanket ban on glass in pubs & clubs, which he called an "extreme" measure, as business leaders & councillors prepared to meet the Chairman of Glasgow's licensing board, Gordon Macdiarmid, to discuss the measures. The ban currently applies to all city centre night-clubs & is due to be extended to venus with entertainment licenses by end-June. Following, this, a ban in pubs would follow in 2007. Glasgow Chamber of Commerce claims the ban is putting tourists off as it suggests the city is dangerous. It could also have a negative impact on the city's bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. It also emerged that Glasgow lost out to Edinburgh on a £250,000 drinks promotion by Brahma beer as the firm could not hand out glass bottles. Mr Purcell said that the council, board, business leaders & police were all united in seeking the best solution in tackling the violence behind the idea of the ban.
