Silica and hard glasses are widely used as envelope materials in light source technology. These materials often suffer from corrosive reactions with the lamp fill dose in the harsh operating environments of such light sources. In particular, it is known that significant silica transport processes occur in metal halide (MH) discharge envelopes, resulting in the thinning of the envelope walls in hotter regions and deposition of material in cooler regions.
