Corrosion of refractory material is the most important factor limiting the life of industrial glass furnaces. Depending on the type of glass, refractory type, and the method of firing, the typical life of such furnaces varies between 2 years and more than 10 years. The corrosion of refractory materials in the melting tank and superstructure during operation results in glass defects, and can also lead to greater thermal losses through the furnace walls. Today, refractory-related defects result in a rejection rate of about 2-10%.
